David Catherwood was born in Belfast in 1956 and joined the Salvation Army at the age of 7 through its Young People's work.
He studied music at Queen's University Belfast, gaining a B.Mus.(Hons) degree, and his present post is that of Director of Music at Campbell College Belfast.
He has had extensive leadership experience within the Salvation Army being Bandmaster at Belfast Temple, (1979-89) Bandmaster of the Ireland Divisional Youth Band, (1989- 93) Songster Leader at Belfast Temple (1993-94) and Bandmaster at Belfast Sydenham. (1997-01)
He was involved with Music camps in Ireland for many years and in recent
years has been guest at many Music Camps in Canada including Roblin Lake, Camp Newport and Camp Selkirk in Ontario and the Pine Lake camp in Alberta. Also many summers have been spent as guests of music camps in the USA in Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania.
In the summer of 2003 David & Wilma Catherwood were guests at the Star Lake music camp in the USA.
In addition to Band & Vocal music published by The Salvation Army various choral music is widely available in the USA published by Warner Bros., Alfred Publishing Co., and Shawnee Press amongst others.
Bands that have recorded David Catherwood's music include The New York Staff band , Williams Fairey Band, the ISB and the Canadian, Chicago and Amsterdam Staff bands.
World famous soloists who have featured David's solos on their CD's include cornet virtuosi David Daws, Roger Webster, Philip Smith and Gordon Ward and the two legendary euphonium players Derrick Kane and Stephen Mead.
Vocalists are not forgotten! in that being Director of Music at Campbell College in Belfast involves taking a daily choir rehearsal - (the College has maintained a choir of nearly 80 boys for very many years) and this experience has resulted in an intimate knowledge of what works (and what doesn't work!) with choirs - so you can be assured that any vocal music offered on this website has been well and truly tested and will be effective vocal items whether written for full choir, children's voices or soloists
David is married to Wilma and they are soldiers at the Belfast Temple corps of the Salvation Army where David plays in the band and Wilma is the Deputy Songster Leader. They have a daughter, Tess who participates in all the sections.
